iPhone SDK and iPhone Software 2.0 Get Official
iPhone users and iPhone developers alike jumped for joy yesterday when Apple announced the iPhone SDK. Apple also previewed its iPhone 2.0 software that is scheduled to release this June. Enterprise customers can register for the iPhone 2.0 software beta right now as well.
According to Apple the iPhone 2.0 software adds some significant features for enterprise users including support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync that provides secure over-the-air push email, contacts, and calendars. Several mail features will be added to the iPhone with the 2.0 update including the ability to view PowerPoint attachments along with Word and Excel. One feature that I have longed for is on the feature list as well, the ability to mass delete and move emails. Too bad Apple didn’t add the ability to mark emails as read in mass.
Sony Ericsson Z770: internet without a smartphone
Sony Ericsson has recently rolled out the Z770, the latest to the Z series line of mobiles giving you a clamshell-style handset that has access to the internet and email without needing to buy a full-fledged smartphone. This handset has a familiar mobile phone design and is not too bulky at just 0.6 inches thick and 3.2 ounces, but still wields the power of web browsing and bringing in your email while on the go.
For internet browsing the Z770 has Magnet Mouse Pointer controlled by a navigation key, giving you different pointers as you scroll across the page for text input, pointing or links, similar to most desktop browsers. The 2.2-inch screen is not too bad for a mobile phone but still can be a little small, so SE added in a pan and zoom feature to make reading that tiny text a little easier.
Polymer Readius folding E-reader phone
Polymer Vision this afternoon revealed that it is now producing the Readius, a device they are billing as the world’s first phone with foldable display. It’s more advanced than Amazon’s Kindle and uses a 5-inch e-paper display that replicates the sharpness of ink and tucks into the main body for portability, creating a much smaller profile than any other e-book reader available.
It’s also a full-fledged phone. The Readius can make calls and connect to the Internet in the US and most other 3G-capable areas of the world. This will allow live RSS reading as other real-time information. The device also supports ActiveSync for synchronizing contacts and e-mail with Microsoft Exchange servers and audiobooks, music playback, and basic games stored on microSDHC cards up to 8GB in size. With the e-paper display, it can last for as long as 30 hours for reading and longer than many phones when it comes to calls.
